Let me know what you all think of this. I've been doing some RPing on Second Life and having a good time. I thought I would share some of the pictures that I took (with permision). Let me know what ya all think...

Been wondering about 2nd Life - how does it work? How does one create avatars, etc? And was all of this done in 2nd life?

I used a program called Comic Book Creator to make the "frames" but all the images were from Second Life. I used the "Snapshot" button in the game. I really didn't plan this completly, I just was going to publish each picture. But as I was going to do that, I found that the saved files from Second Life were .PNG files. So no to many sites will take that type of file. I remembered that I had Comic Book Creator and I checked and it would take the files and editing in it was pretty easy so I just started to mess around... the next thing you know... I have 6 pages done... Now that I have done this once I'll try to think it through a bit durring my next RP session... My Second Life name is Daskanrn Rubble if you want to look me up on there. I'm really still pretty green with the "Game" part. I don't have tons of clothes and "Skins" yet but I'm getting more things... I like it, and I'm getting better at the idea of the RP thanks to a good friend!! Look me up and maybe we can make a nice comic one time

Katja, like Janet, I've become addicted to SL, hanging out in the Gor sims and dealing with mayhem here and there. Creating a basic SL account is free and straightforward and there is a lot of free stuff to help in approving your newbie appearance. It does require that your computer be up to snuff - no pun intended - graphicswise but you'll be told when you try to load the software if there's a problem. Let know if you want help walking it through. My SL name is Vorgous Carver. You have my email address.

SL sure sounds & looks interesting, but apart from the free software initially, does it involve other costs to acquire 'skins', etc.?

And of course, looks like one needs quite a bit of time to become immersed in the environment? Time which I unfortunately don't have much of right now, but will certainly check out some time!

The best answer to the question of costs is that it can cost as little or as much as you want, and it depends on what you want to do and look like. There are people that buy homes and advanced shapes, skins, animations, and clothes. But there are plenty of freebie shapes, skins, animations, and clothes. And you do not need a "home." In fact, one danger is collecting too many freebies in your "inventory" that you can't find what you want when you want it. Janet can provide you more information on what it cost her.

For my example, I'm a taverner outlaw in Gor primarily. I started with a free shape and skin and free clothes. I paid for a bow and arrow and sword. I later found out I could have gotten serviceable weapons for free. The weapons might not have had bells and whistles but they would have done the same damage as paid-for weapons. I still use a free shape, but I upgraded my skin and paid for the skin to look a bit better (from what I can see there are far more free options in skin for women than men). I also ended up paying for an outlaw outfit, but actually my current mix and match outfit is mostly free and could be all free if I changed the pants which is the only thing remaining from the outfit that I bought.

Yes, there are some people that buy, buy, buy, but as I say it is entirely unnecessary and there are generally free options around. There are even websites around that guide people to free and nearly free items.

The biggest issue is time. You find yourself on and on and on.

Besides guides you can find from googling, you can also find tutorials on how to do things on youtube. Or, the best way to learn is to ask others while you are on line.

Well, i run four characters, have been in SL for about 7 months now and, so far, it's cost me less than £50 in bits for it. Compared to a PC Game in a box, that's very very good value!
